What is Voice over Internet Protocol?

VOIP is the technology used to transmit voice conversations over a data network onto your business communication system using Internet Protocol. VOIP is the latest technology revolutionising the Telecommunications landscape. Businesses of all sizes have changed their entire telephone system to use VOIP due to the significant benefits provided.

Some of the Benefits of VOIP

  • 'Free' internal calls to all parts of the company that share the same computer network
  • Simpler infrastructure - with VoIP you can simply add or move around phones and capacity without installing new cables
  • Reduced operating costs - centralised system resources such as voicemail, switchboard operation and network management
  • Full remote management - everything from reconfiguring voicemail to adding a new extension can be done without the need for an engineer site visit

VOIP in a little more detail

At the residential end of the market Skype a proprietary system is used by millions of people to make free calls between friends and family across the internet all over the world. At the business end of the market SIP trunking provides far more resiliency and the ability to interconnect with the present voice networks worldwide. Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) provides an open programming protocol for Voice, text and video applications.

All devices, client PC/Laptops, PDA's and in the future smart phones, are or will be multiple application devices capable of using and receiving the 3 main applications Text, Voice and Video. SIP is the back ground programming protocol which will allow the mixed media sessions. With the massive uptake of Broadband and ever increasing speeds with reducing costs, more services are being and will be delivered via a broadband connection; voice is just one of the additional services to be offered.
